Dora Delyska: A waltz is a simple dance, a gentle movement. It has a clear structure and distinct rhythm.

In my project “Alles Walzer, einmal anders! “, I have tried to build up a complex program around the simplicity of the dance. All the pieces are connected to the waltz, by name, rhythm or a sound image. But each one has an individual structure and creates its own universe of emotions. The significant waltzing rhythm (¾ time) is the core, that unites all the compositions from beginning till the very last piece, which creates a clear musical line and a feeling of completeness.

The first association one has with a waltz and maybe the most famous one, is the Viennese one - moving gently, in elegant clothing, the dancing couple is driven by the inner pulsation of the waltz. The phrase “Alles Walzer” is being said just before the couple enters the dance floor and marks the beginning of the waltz (in Austria). It is the brief moment when expectation turns into action, when silence melts into the music.

The second part of the title “einmal anders” (once on a different way) refers to the different side of the waltz, that is represented on this CD by less known compositions, such as waltzes by Ligeti, Bartok and Debussy.

My CD has the goal to show a different perspective of the waltz and bring the audience to an unexpected musical journey, full of strong emotions and distinct rhythm.

Hier speelt een ware musicus, een die ernaar streeft om diep door te dringen tot het binnenste van de muziek. Zo schrijven de critici over de Bulgaarse pianiste Doria Deliyska. Zij nam op deze cd beroemde werken op van componisten als Franz Schubert, Josef Strauss en Maurice Ravel, naast minder bekend werk van Györgyi Ligeti, Béla Bartók en Claude Debussy. Haar doel was een andere kant te laten zien van de wals, het publiek een onverwachte muzikale reis te bieden, vol krachtige emoties en weergaloos ritme. Het is een verfijnde verzameling originele walsen voor piano geworden.

De ervaren pianiste, woonachtig in Wenen, heeft voornamelijk Oostenrijkse en Duitse klassiekers op haar repertoire staan. Voor Dora is een wals een simpele dans, een tedere beweging. Voor haar cd Alles Walzer, einmal anders! wilde ze een complex programma bouwen rond de eenvoudige dans. Alle stukken zijn verbonden met de wals, in naam, ritme of klankbeeld. Maar elk stuk heeft een eigen structuur, een eigen universum aan emoties. De significante driekwartsmaat van de wals vormt de basis die alle composities vanaf het eerste tot het laatste stuk verenigt, wat een duidelijke muzikale lijn en gevoel van volledigheid oproept.

Bij een wals denken we als eerste aan de, en wellicht beroemdste, Weense wals. Het danspaar zweeft bedachtzaam over de vloer, is elegant gekleed en wordt voortgedreven door de innerlijke harteklop van de wals. In Oostenrijk wordt kort voordat het danspaar de dansvloer opgaat, "Alles Walzer" geroepen. Dat markeert het begin van de wals. Het is het korte moment waarin verwachting overgaat in actie, waarin de stilte zich vermengt met de muziek.

Het tweede deel van de titel "einmal anders" (nu eens anders), verwijst naar de andere kant van de wals, die op deze cd wordt vertegenwoordigd door de minder bekende composities van Ligeti, Bartók en Debussy.

Dora Delyska: Ein Walzer ist ein einfacher Tanz, eine sanfte Bewegung. Er hat eine klare Struktur und einen ausgeprägten Rhythmus.

In meinem Projekt "Alles Walzer, einmal anders! " habe ich versucht, ein komplexes Programm um die Einfachheit des Tanzes herum aufzubauen. Alle Stücke sind mit dem Walzer verbunden, durch Namen, Rhythmus oder ein Klangbild. Aber jedes hat eine individuelle Struktur und schafft ein eigenes Universum an Emotionen. Der signifikante Walzerrhythmus (¾ Takt) ist der Kern, der alle Kompositionen vom Anfang bis zum letzten Stück vereint, was eine klare musikalische Linie und ein Gefühl der Vollständigkeit erzeugt.

Die erste Assoziation, die man mit einem Walzer hat, und vielleicht die bekannteste, ist die des Wiener Walzers - das Tanzpaar bewegt sich sanft, in eleganter Kleidung und wird vom inneren Pulsieren des Walzers angetrieben. Der Satz "Alles Walzer" wird gesagt, kurz bevor das Paar die Tanzfläche betritt und markiert den Beginn des Walzers (in Österreich). Es ist der kurze Moment, in dem die Erwartung in Handlung übergeht, in dem die Stille mit der Musik verschmilzt.

Der zweite Teil des Titels "einmal anders" bezieht sich auf die andere Seite des Walzers, die auf dieser CD durch weniger bekannte Kompositionen, wie Walzer von Ligeti, Bartok und Debussy, repräsentiert wird.

Meine CD hat das Ziel, eine andere Perspektive des Walzers zu zeigen und den Zuhörer auf eine unerwartete musikalische Reise voller starker Emotionen und ausgeprägtem Rhythmus zu führen.

Dora Deliyska (piano)

Dora Deliyska has established herself not only as one of the leading pianists of the present time, but also as one of the most versatile and intriguing. Her artistic projects have their own dramaturgy, imbuing piano literature and the art of interpretation with a new and unique sense of perspective.
Years of concert appearances and audio and video recordings have earned Dora Deliyska international acclaim from both critics and audiences. Her extensive repertoire ranges from Bach to Ligeti. She creates a connection between sensitive piano interpretation, precise virtuosity and a sound musicological argument.
Deliyska performs regularly at renowned concert halls such as the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Oosterpoort Music Center (Netherlands), the Bulgaria Concert Hall and many other venues in Europe. She frequently appears in Asian countries including China, Thailand, Vietnam and Qatar, as well as in South America, where she also gives master classes at prestigious musical institutions.
Her career as a soloist was launched with a debut CD of works by Franz Liszt; this was followed by further recordings of Liszt and Chopin. Her 2013 Schubert disc won the “Supersonic Award” of the classical music magazine Pizzicato.
Her 2011 CD, Doppelgänger, featuring Liszt transcriptions of Schubert songs, was also met with enthusiasm. A review described this disc as “simply sensational”, stating that Deliyska “ranks amongst the best, and not merely on a technical level”.
With her Danzas album, the artist brings together musician friends. Intense rhythms, dance motifs and jazzy sounds make the disc one of “the most spectacular piano discs that have been produced of late”.
Her album The B-A-C-H Project, released in March 2018, documents for the first time the success of her intensive musicological and dramaturgical reflections. The B-A-C-H Project very quickly garnered international acclaim from critics and music journalists: “Dora Deliyska has long established herself on the international piano scene. Her sensitive touch and her lyrical art of interpretation are treasured worldwide – this, alongside complete technical perfection, brings back a virtue which seems to have been underestimated for a long time: emotional competence. A fascinating experience, an outstanding album!”; “a wonderful trans-epochal listening experience”.
Dora Deliyska has been awarded numerous scholarships and prizes, including by the Dr. Wolfgang Boesch Foundation in Vienna, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture and the Dutch Labberte Foundation. She has also received the Josef Windisch Scholarship and a scholarship from the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture. Her artistic activities are supported in Vienna by Kuhn Rechtsanwälte GmbH.

Franz Schubert

Franz Peter Schubert was an Austrian composer. Schubert already died before his 32nd birthday, but was extremely prolific during his lifetime. His output consists of over six hundred secular vocal works (mainly Lieder), seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a large body of chamber and piano music. Appreciation of his music while he was alive was limited to a relatively small circle of admirers in Vienna, but interest in his work increased significantly in the decades following his death. Felix Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms and other 19th-century composers discovered and championed his works. Today, Schubert is ranked among the greatest composers of the late Classical and early Romantic eras and is one of the most frequently performed composers of the early nineteenth century.
It was in the genre of the Lied that Schubert made his most indelible mark. Prior to Schubert's influence, Lieder tended toward a strophic, syllabic treatment of text, evoking the folksong qualities engendered by the stirrings of Romantic nationalism. Schubert expanded the potentialities of the genre like no other composer before.

He was made Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1903. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and his use of non-traditional scales and chromaticism influenced many composers who followed. Debussy's music is noted for its sensory content and frequent usage of non-traditional tonalities. The prominent French literary style of his period was known as Symbolism, and this movement directly inspired Debussy both as a composer and as an active cultural participant Among his most famous works are his Clair de Lune, his Three Nocturnes...

Maurice Ravel

Joseph Maurice Ravel was a French composer who is often associated with impressionism along with his elder contemporary Claude Debussy, although both composers rejected the term. In the 1920s and 1930s Ravel was internationally regarded as France's greatest living composer.
Born to a music-loving family, Ravel attended France's premier music college, the Paris Conservatoire; he was not well regarded by its conservative establishment, whose biased treatment of him caused a scandal. After leaving the Conservatoire Ravel found his own way as a composer, developing a style of great clarity, incorporating elements of baroque, neoclassicism and, in his later works, jazz. He liked to experiment with musical form, as in his best-known work, Boléro (1928), in which repetition takes the place of development. He made some orchestral arrangements of other composers' music, of which his 1922 version of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition is the best known.
As a slow and painstaking worker, Ravel composed fewer pieces than many of his contemporaries. Among his works to enter the repertoire are pieces for piano, chamber music, two piano concertos, ballet music, two operas, and eight song cycles; he wrote no symphonies and only one religious work. Many of his works exist in two versions: a first, piano score and a later orchestration. Some of his piano music, such as Gaspard de la nuit (1908), is exceptionally difficult to play, and his complex orchestral works such as Daphnis et Chloé (1912) require skilful balance in performance.

Béla Bartók

Next to Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky, Béla Bartók was a third seminal innovator of European art music at the start of the twentieth century. Bartók, too, sought a way out of the deadlock of tonal music around 1900, and he found it in folk music. Initially, he tied in with the nationalistic tradition of Franz Liszt with his tone poem Kossuth, but eventually he found his own voice with the rediscovery of the music of Hungarian peasants. Together with Zoltán Kodály he was one of the first to apply the results of folkloric research into his own compositions. One major difference between him and composers of the 19th century, was that Bartók did not adjust to the system of tonality, but created his own musical idiom from folk music. Because of this, his composition style was flexible to other musical trends, without having to violate his own view points. For example, his two Violin sonates come close to Schoenberg's free expressionism, and after 1926 his music started to show neoclassicistic tendencies, comparable to Stravinsky's music. Bartók was not just interested in Hungarian folk music, but could appreciate musical folklore from all of the Balkan, Turkey and North-Africa as well.

While the science fiction classic 2001: A Space Oddyssey created publicity for Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra in particular, most of the impressive music comes from Ligeti's Atmosphères and his Requiem. Ligeti's somber sounds could also be applied to happier things: in his obscene and death-defying opera Le Grand Macabre he would mock the horroreffects of experimental music in a hilarious manner. Ligeti's maniac experiments often exceeded the human measure (think of his virtuoso Etudes for piano). Perhaps his most consequent work is the purely mechanic Poème Symphonique for 100 ticking metronomes. Legend goes that its première was recorded only to...
